Instagram Comment Counter
Instagram shows one number under a post. Paste the link here to get the counts that matter: total comments, how many different people commented, who commented more than once, and how many were replies. Free up to 200 comments.
Comments are not the same as commenters
“How many comments did my post get?” and “how many people commented on my post?” sound like the same question. They rarely have the same answer. One enthusiastic follower can leave twenty comments; a thread of back-and-forth replies between two friends can add dozens more. Instagram only ever shows you the first number.
IGComments gives you both, side by side:
- Total comments — every comment and reply we could fetch from the public thread.
- Unique commenters — the number of different accounts behind those comments.
- Repeat commenters — how many accounts commented more than once, and the top 10 most active by name.
- Replies vs top-level — how many comments started a thread and how many were answers inside one.
A worked example
Imagine a giveaway post showing 1,200 comments. After counting:
| Count | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total comments fetched | 1,160 | 40 are hidden, filtered or deleted on Instagram’s side |
| Top-level comments | 1,010 | The actual entries |
| Replies | 150 | Mostly the host answering questions |
| Unique commenters | 540 | The real number of people who took part |
| Repeat commenters | 210 | People who entered more than once, as the rules allowed |
The headline figure suggested 1,200 participants. The honest answer is 540 people. That matters if you are reporting reach to a sponsor, pricing a future collaboration, or deciding whether “tag a friend, one entry per tag” rules are bringing in new people or just more comments from the same ones. The guide to counting unique commenters covers this in more detail.
Why the count differs from Instagram’s
The number under a post is Instagram’s own tally, and it includes comments nobody else can see:
- comments caught by Instagram’s spam filter,
- comments hidden by the account’s keyword filters or by “hide offensive comments”,
- comments from restricted accounts, visible only to the commenter,
- comments that were deleted but still linger in the cached count.
No outside tool can fetch those, so a count from IGComments is usually a little lower than Instagram’s figure. A small gap is normal. If the gap is large, we say so on the results page. The full list of causes is in why the Instagram comment count doesn’t match.
Count only what you care about
The totals are a starting point. Filters let you count a specific slice of the thread, and the result count updates as you go:
- Comments posted before a deadline — use the date range filter.
- Comments that tagged a friend — the has-@mentions filter.
- People who asked a question — the questions filter.
- Comments containing a word or hashtag — search for it.
- Each person once — one comment per person turns any filtered view into a count of people instead of comments.
Stack them: “one comment per person, has @mentions, posted before Friday 23:59” is a count of valid giveaway entrants, and you can export that exact list.
Getting the names, not just the number
A count is often the first step toward a list. Once you have the number you trust, export the same filtered view to CSV, Excel or JSON, with username, comment, timestamp, likes and reply details on every row.
Counting is free for posts with up to 200 comments. On larger posts the counts cover the first 200 comments until you buy a one-time pass — $4.99 up to 10,000 comments, $9.99 up to 30,000, $14.99 up to 100,000. No subscription, no Instagram login, public posts and Reels only. See pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see how many people commented on my Instagram post?
Instagram only shows the total number of comments. Paste the post link into IGComments to see unique commenters — the number of different accounts — alongside the total.
Does the comment count include replies?
Yes. Total comments include replies, and the stats show how many were replies versus top-level comments so you can count either on its own.
Why is my count lower than the number Instagram shows?
Instagram’s number includes spam-filtered, hidden, restricted and deleted comments that are not publicly visible. No tool can fetch those, so the count of visible comments is usually a little lower.
Can I count comments on someone else’s post?
Yes, if the post or Reel is public. You don’t need to own the account or log in.
How do I count giveaway entries?
Use one comment per person, add the has-@mentions filter if tagging was required, and set a date range ending at your deadline. The result count is your number of eligible entrants.
Can I see who commented the most?
Yes. The stats list the 10 most active commenters with their comment counts, and searching an @username shows every comment that person left.
Is counting comments free?
Yes for posts with up to 200 comments. Larger posts show counts for the first 200 comments; a one-time Export Pass covers the full post.
